Featuring: Tenleytown-AU Park
Historic Tenleytown was named after a local tavern owner, John Tenally. Apparently, President Washington affectionately referred to the intersection of River Road and what is now Wisconsin Avenue as "Tenally's Town" and the name stuck. By the early 19th century, the name "Tenleytown" had become commonplace. It was also the site of Fort Reno, which served as a garrison during the Civil War, and is has now become a reservoir. The site of John Tenally's tavern is still the centerpiece of Tenleytown; having been developed into a Sears in 1940, followed by a Hechinger's during the 1990's, and now a mixed-used development featuring Best Buy, Container Store, and the six-story Cityline condos. Tenleytown-AU Park has thrived throughout the centuries, and was developed into it's current residential state during the 1930's and 40's. It features many single-family homes of all brick construction and hardwood floors, mostly colonial, cape-cod, and bungalow style homes.
